Health Education
Every year millions of Americans are hospitalized because of illness and injury. Many of these people suffer from lifelong disabilities or die because no one knew what to do to help. Fortunately, American Red Cross first aid and CPR instructors are training members of our community to care for victims until help arrives. Our dedicated volunteers train over 13,000 a year in their workplace and their communities. Opportunities are available days, evenings, and weekends for those with teaching and public speaking skills to teach others these lifesaving techniques.Military
In the event of any emergency, critical illness or death in the immediate family of a service member, Red Cross military duty workers are often called. Their job is to verify the family situation and relay an emergency leave request to the proper military authorities. These volunteers are on call evenings, weekends, and holidays to lend a compassionate ear to those in need.Disaster
Volunteers are needed to respond locally to disasters, such as house fires and tornadoes. Red Cross disaster volunteers distribute vouchers to victims so that they have emergency shelter and can replace lost clothing, medication, and purchase food. After extensive training and local experience volunteers may be sent to the scenes of disasters across the country. Disaster volunteers are on-call evenings, weekends, and holidays to handle any emergency situation.Blood Services
Volunteers are needed to greet potential blood donors and make them feel welcome at local blood drives. Canteen volunteers are also needed to serve donors refreshments and watch for signs of becoming faint or bleeding. Greeters and canteen workers should be friendly, helpful, and enjoy meeting people to make blood donation a positive experience.Office Work
